Catholic women from all over the world gathered in Jerusalem to celebrate an important anniversary ... 100 years of the World Union of Organizations of Catholic Women (WUCWO), which was founded in 1910 to coordinate "the presence, participation and shared responsibility of Catholic women in society and the Church." One hundred years later, five hundred delegates, representing a number of women estimated at five million, have found themselves in the Holy City to discuss - among other topics - marriage and family life, and to encounter the local Christians and their lives in the Holy Land.KAREN M. HURLEY, President WUCWO: "We are delighted to be here together to celebrate the centenary of the World Union of Catholic Women's Organizations. We received a fantastic welcome from the people of the Holy Land, and we sincerely hope that our sisters in Christ in this region will be able to join us, becoming more involved in various activities in which we participate. You know, women have been active in their families, their faith and what they are doing in the Church and in the community, and I hope that in the next 100 years of our organization, we will be able to really involve all women, whether they are part of the national organization, or not, because they are sisters in Christ, and together we can make a difference in the world. "The delegates from sixty countries attended Mass celebrated by the Latin Patriarch Fouad Twal, before his departure for Rome for the Synod of Bishops of the Middle East. This was followed by five days of meetings and discussions, in addition to which, the participants were also able to visit Jerusalem and Galilee. All of this was both a celebration and a learning experience, which has benefited both these Catholic women from all over the world, as well as local Christians.
