Living Close to Nature Like St. Francis
The University of St. Thomas in Houston believes that Franciscans are a model for a Catholic approach to environmentalism. But to experience God in the natural world, one first has to come into contact with nature. So the University of St. Thomas is helping students to experience nature as St. Francis did. Sr. Damien Marie, FSE, University of St. Thomas, Houston"We've travelled to Assisi as part of a study abroad between our University and here. Our sisters have a home here. They live very close to the land and I wanted to bring our students here to give them that same experience of being on the land, of the experience of working together closely on the land, learning new tasks and skills that they've never learnt before. They've been digging, they've been weeding, working in the garden but, in the mystery of St. Francis, experiencing that close relationship we have with the land and how that it can build us up as a group".After Assisi, the students go on to Florence to explore how God has been represented in Art, and then to Rome for an audience with the Holy Father.
