New Archbishop of Los Angeles Recalls His Vocation
Archbishop Jose Gomez, recognized in 2005 by Time magazine as one of the 25 most influential Hispanics in the United States, winner of the Good Shepherd in 2003 and until recently the Archbishop of San Antonio, was recently appointed co-adjunct Archbishop of Los Angeles, USA. Archbishop Gomez was born in Monterrey, Mexico on December 26, 1951 and discovered his calling to the priesthood at a young age. He recalled his path to the priesthood with H2onews: "Owing to family circumstances, I started thinking more seriously after I finished high school. Then I felt God calling me to the priesthood. But I decided it would be better to wait until I finished college. However I think the key point of my priestly vocation was that when I finished school, I decided to go to daily Mass. I thought that if I was a Catholic, I needed to take my faith seriously." Archbishop Jose Gomez, despite familial obstacles and personal fears before his ordination, recalls that day with great joy and satisfaction, both for him and his family: "So in the end, despite a little doubt--they were not completely convinced-- this was the greatest joy that Our Lord God gave to them and the greatest blessing that has been given to me." Since then Archbishop Gomez has been one of the most active priests in the United States and has played a fundamental role in working with Hispanic communities in the country. In 2007, he was listed on CNN's "Notable Hispanics" on the occasion of the "Hispanic Heritage Month", and is a founding member of the Catholic Association of Latino Leaders (CALL), among other important positions. He says hispanics are a "blessing" for the U.S., for the Church, and for bishops."Hispanics and Latinos,” he says, “are people of faith with a deep cultural tradition based on the fundamentals of the faith, which is a novelty in the Church of America." http://www.archsa.org/http://www.archdiocese.la/http://www.hispanicleaders.net/
