Minute With the Pope: Feb. 15, 2012
"Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do", Benedict XVI said during the Feb. 15 general audience, remembering Jesus' words from the Cross. "Jesus", he said, "who asks the Father to forgive those who are crucifying him invites us to carry out the difficult gesture of praying for those who have done us wrong, who have damaged us." Reflecting on these words, he said that Jesus asks all people "to know always how to forgive, so that the light of God might illumine their hearts. He invites us in our prayer to live the same attitude of mercy and love that God has for us. In the ‘Our Father’ we say daily, 'Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who have sinned against us.' "At the same time, at the moment just before death, Jesus entrusts himself totally to the hands of God the Father", stated the Pope. The Pontiff concluded by saying that Jesus' dying words of "Father, into your hands I commend my spirit' communicate to us the certainty that, as hard as the trials, difficulties and problems or painful the suffering may be, we will never fall from the hands of God - those hands that have created us, that sustain and accompany us on the path of existence - because they are guided by an infinite and faithful love."
