The historical memory of Pius XII
We are Jewish we grew up hating the name Pius XII. We believed that he was anti-Semitic, we believed that he was a Nazi collaborator, we believed all of the all of the statements that have been made about him we believed. Providential events occurred where we were then shown the light so to speak.Gary Krupp and his wife Meredith dedicate their time to "removing obstacles between the religions and by initiating gestures of good will." They founded the Pave the Way Foundation to do just that.Clearing the name of the World War II pope has become one of their missions. That's why Krupp has written volumes like this one, to present the information in Pius XII's favor. For him, it's just a task of telling the truth. You know, and they made a great major film about the Oscar Schindler, who saved 1600 Jews, very admirable. But he did, and so on. Pius XII saved close to a million. And a million Jews then is four million today. And in the entire world, there are sixteen million Jews. That’s twenty-five percent of the world’s population today that are alive because of his actions, or the actions of the Roman Catholic Church. And the most astounding thing is that the critics say, well everybody, because of his silence and his fear, that he did nothing, forced all the churchmen to do things on their own, essentially, which is nonsense, because the same actions were duplicated all over the world. And false baptismal papers were used, all kinds of other mechanisms to hide Jews here in Rome and so on.Krupp claims to even have seen a document in which, had the Vatican been invaded by Nazis, the Pope would have resigned and established a Holy See government in exile in PortugaStories of Pius XII's personal touch have even filtered through, though the Pope himself tried to keep them secret. We have one letter, which, I can assure you that nobody wanted me to put it in the new book that we have, but I put it in anyway because I said that one day this may also prove what happened. It is an unusual letter, written by a woman who is alive today in Northern Italy, who said she was with her mother, her uncle, and a few other relatives in an audience with Pius XII in 1947. Her uncle immediately looks at the Pope and he says, “You were dressed as a Franciscan,” and looked at Montini who was standing next to him, “and you as a regular priest. You took me out of the ghetto into the Vatican.” Montini immediately said, “silence, don't ever repeat that story.” She writes this in the letter to us. This may have happened. My opinion, it definitely happened. Why? Pacelli had an unusual habit. Although he had a fantastic memory, he would always go back to the original source. For example, if he was going to quote a book, he would always go back to the book to get the exact quote. He needed to see things in his own eyes. He used to take the car out into bombed areas in Rome, and he certainly wasn't afraid of that. I can see him going into the ghetto and seeing what was happening. Maybe someday a document will come up proving that, yes indeed, this did happen. It's a grueling process of documenting everything possible, but they're seeing resultsThis is a very significant issue, we’re not stopping, and we know that it’s like moving a dam; the dam is cracking now, without question. We have some new projects that are now going to push this. My whole issue is just getting people to look at it, because if you have an open mind and look at this, you will agree with it. We had a meeting at the Yashiveh University in New York.Seventy were Rabbinic students. And I did a whole thing on it. One hundred percent of them said there’s no question here. Because they have not been influenced, they haven’t gotten this negative nonsense that I grew up with unfortunately. And I repent for this, and my repentance is trying to straighten this out, at least as one man who saved Jewish lives.
