Father Gabriele Amorth, exorcist of the diocese of Rome, defines "exorcism" to H2onews:"It is an official prayer made in the name of the Church and is thus sacramental. It frees people from diabolic possession or from the evils caused by the devil." Father Amorth recalls that Christ himself was an exorcist and that John Paul II explicitly told him that this was one of Jesus' main activities. "We see indeed how He cast the devil out on several occasions and how the people were in awe at His power and at how the devil obeyed Him." However, Christ also gave humanity – he said – the power to expel demons: "In Mk. 16:17 He says, 'Those who believe in me will cast out demons in my name.' Therefore, any believer, who believes with true faith in Jesus Christ, can with His strength and power, cast out demons." Father Amorth explained that many saints, who were not exorcists, expelled demons, and he considers prayer and faith the authentic vehicles for true liberation.
