Strengthened by the example Christ, “the Christian is moved to contribute toward creating just societies, where all receive what is necessary to live according to the dignity proper to the human person and where justice is enlivened by love.” This is what Benedict XVI urges in this year’s Message for Lent, which was presented on Thursday, February 4th at the Holy See’s Press Conference. The Cross, where the just man dies for the guilty, reveals that man is in need of God in order to realize himself fully. Conversion to Christ ultimately means to abandon the illusion of self-sufficiency. The origin of injustice, the Gospel says, lies in the human heart. Partaking in the mystery of God, who frees man through the sacrifice of His Son, we are liberated from the desire to possess and from the logic of egoism, and so will be able to practice deeds that are open to justice, the common good and social development.
