Truth in the Digital Age: Message of Archbishop Celli
On the occasion of the 45th World Day of Social Communications, which is celebrated the 5th of June, with the slogan: “Truth, Proclamation, and Authenticity of Life in the Digital Age.” Mons. Claudio Maria Celli, president of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, discusses the challenge of “truth” in the digital age and addresses especially those who are reflecting upon this issue throughout the world. “Our desire is not only for an intellectual knowledge; our work, our commitment calls us to proclaim, today, in the everyday life of our society, the word, the message of the Lord Christ.”Monsignor Celli recalled that in the digital age the Pope calls us to be missionaries and preachers of Christ:“To be faithful to him means not only speaking of him and the gospel, it implies that we are coherent, authentic, and sincere people…You have to remember that we are not followers of an ideology, we pertain to a person, we pertain to Christ the Lord. It is Christ the Lord who insists ‘I am the truth, the life and the way.’ All of us are involved in this proclamation. And as you have seen the Pope strongly underlines: ‘Truth, proclamation and witness’, an authentic witness.”“We must be conscientious, above all, of the value of the truth which we wish to share. It is not based on popularity or the quantity of attention it provokes. It must become our daily food and not the attraction of an instant. What a task for us all!” The President of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications’ message launching a challenge for the digital age:“Yes, we must be present in social networks, but with our human, completely Gospel, profound, committed witness. I believe that this is the message of the Holy Father during this 45th World Day of Social Communications, he is calling us, he is inviting us. And, I would say, he is challenging us.”
