“New disciples of Emmaus: Living as Christians in university” is the title of the first European congress of university students underway in Italy from July 6th to 12th and organized by the Council of European Bishops’ Conferences (CCEE) and the office of university pastoral activity of the Vicariate of Rome.

The congress welcomes 1300 students from 31 countries, all active participants in university pastoral activities. Monsignor Lorenzo Leuzzi explains that they’re meeting to exchange experiences and strengthen the presence of Christ on campus.

“It is an important moment for all of Europe’s episcopal conferences, because through the participation of the delegations we will be able to create a university pastoral network to consolidate the work that is already conducted in many university chaplaincies.”

“An important moment will be the encounter with Pope Benedict XVI precisely on the feast of St. Benedict, Patron Saint of Europe and the Holy Father’s saint’s day. On this day, the Pope will meet European youth who, in a certain way, represent Europe.”

Monsignor Leuzzi invites all young people to participate in this audience with the Holy Father and in the Mass next Saturday, July 11th that will be presided by Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone.

“I invite all young people who wish to participate to join all the other participants on this Saturday morning, both for the Eucharistic celebration and, afterwards, for the encounter with the Pope in St Peter’s Basilica, because it is an opportunity to truly experience an intense moment of communion with the Risen Lord next to Peter, so as to build together a new culture in Europe that may serve man.”
