Missionaries of Charity in the Holy Land
Smiling and discrete in their distinctive white saris with blue borders, you often meet them walking two by two along the streets of the old city in the direction of the neediest, the poorest of the poor. For 10 years the Daughters of Mother Teresa have had a house here in Jerusalem. Their presence here is silent but effective, comprising much prayer and much love. Their specific mission here consists of going from house to house to visit the sick, the elderly, and the many difficult situations that many families face in the old city ...Sr. LOUISE Rosillo, Superior of the Missionaries of Charity - Gersualemme: "When we can we help them in their material needs, offering food, clothing, medicines, money for college tuition. Of course we are friends with many Muslim families. We visit them, listen to their problems, their difficulties ... we pray for them."A solemn Mass in the parish church of San Salvatore on August 29 at 11 am, celebrated here in the holy city to mark the centenary of the birth of Mother Teresa.Sr LOUISE Rosillo: "A day of thanksgiving for Mother Teresa, for the gift of Mother Teresa, a gift of testimony for the Church and the world ... why Mother Teresa is for everyone."The Missionaries of Charity are also present in Bethlehem, Nablus and Gaza. It was here in Gaza almost 40 years ago that they began their mission in the Holy Land. Today, their mission continues as an important presence of prayer, listening, spiritual support and love for the tiny Catholic community in Gaza City. But not only them...Poverty and precariousness. It's far from a simple daily life here in Gaza where, among other things, there's a lack of drinkable water, and electricity in homes is a luxury for few and lasts only a very few hours a day. Yet the simplicity and joy on the faces of the sisters never fail. In a house adjoining the church, they care for severely disabled children by providing them assistance and appropriate treatment. Few places such as this exist in Gaza which almost totally lacks orphanages or shelters for people with disabilities. Also because, as is known, in Muslim culture disability is frowned upon and often concealed within the families themselves. The 5 Missionaries of Charity in Gaza also work in another building, a shelter for women, the elderly and the lonely.Sr. THERESENA, Superior of the Missionaries of Charity - Gaza City: "Doing this work we witness our Christian life here, because here we do not preach, but evangelize with small actions, like our mother's founder said: 'What you do is in the name of God '. And here we witness Christ in this way. "And during the war, we ask?Sr. M. THERESENASup Missionaries of Charity - Gaza City: "By the grace of God nothing happened there. We had so much confidence in Him, we knew that He would take care of us. What would we do with children in this war situation? God will take care of them - we said - and he did. Has been taking care of the children, and us, and nothing happened."
