Benedict XVI: "I am deeply close to the people affected by the recent earthquake in Turkey and their families. To each I assure my prayers as I ask the international community to contribute promptly and generously to relief efforts.
My condolences go also to the victims of the atrocious violence, that has stained Nigeria with blood and has not spared even defenseless children. Once again I repeat with a heavy heart that violence does not solve conflicts, but only increases tragic consequences. I appeal to those in the country that have civilian and religious responsibilities, to strive for the safe and peaceful coexistence of all people. I express, finally, my closeness to the pastors and faithful and I pray that Nigerians, strong and firm in hope, be authentic witnesses of reconciliation."
